SWV is a system for cataloguing Siza’s works. Created in the same way as Bach’s BWV, it associates an identifying acronym (the SWV) with a chronologically based alphanumeric system (as in opus cataloguing) that chronologically identifies each of Siza’s works.

The following triptychs offer us the context of possible Geographies of Siza Baroque.

Siza Baroque III, Colloquium “Concrete, White, Gold”, at the Soares dos Reis National Museum, 7 December 2024

December brings us to the third and final phase of the Siza Baroque project: the final colloquium of researchers on the 7th, followed by the Magnificat in Gilded Wood concert on the 14th (celebrating the relevance of the Baroque in architecture, music and art), a composition by Eurico Carrapatoso, dedicated by the project team to Álvaro Siza.

The colloquium will reflect the idiosyncrasies of the group of researchers, residents and guests, those of the craft of architecture itself and of Siza’s work in particular, from “Waiting for Success” (a title stolen from Henrique Pousão’s work, exhibited at the Soares dos Reis National Museum, in the vicinity of the “Baroque Chamber”), through the Concrete, White and Golden periods that the research has identified as Siza’s various phases (as with Picasso), albeit with fluctuations, contaminations and resonances between them.

In this sense, each researcher will present a short paper (15 min.) in which Siza’s work and/or the idea of the Baroque can be central, parallel subjects or, at the limit, appear in absence, or in a fleeting image (appearance of an angel, like Siza’s).

It is the conviction of the project team that the synthesis of all the perspectives will bring us closer to an accurate understanding of Siza’s work, to clarifying some of the misunderstandings that persist concerning the Baroque as an idea, and of this idea extending to the present day and contaminating us.

Concrete, White, Gold will take place on December 7 in the Auditorium of the Soares dos Reis National Museum and is open to the public, subject to prior registration here:
